PNG PM sacks ministers

7:18 am on 11 March 2014

The Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has sacked the Treasurer Don Polye and the Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations Mark Maipakai.

PNG Edge reports Mr O'Neill announced the sackings yesterday, describing them as a neccessary move to maintain stability in his coalition government.

He claims that Mr Polye's conduct as Minister of Treasury and as a senior member of the government has been an ongoing concern.

Mr Polye is the leader of the Triumph, Heritage and Empowerment party, the second biggest party in the coalition after Mr O'Neill's People's National Congress.

Mr Maipakai is also a member of the THE party.

The Prime Minister says he will assume the Ministry of Treasury and Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion, another member of the THE party, will hold the Ministry of Labour and Industrial Relations portfolios until permanent appointments are made.

Meanwhile, Peter O'Neill says the THE Party remains an integral member of the government.
