PNG provincial hospital in dire straits

4:29 pm on 11 March 2014

Maprik Hospital in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province is operating just an outpatients and a labour ward after 17 clinical staff were retrenched.

The PNG Edge website reports the head doctor Stenard Hiasinri saying all other wards at the hospital have been closed as the building had deteriorated badly.

The wards closed are the pediatric, adult and mothers wards.

He says they have only 17 medical staff, four nursing officers and four community health workers.

Dr Hiasinri says the few staff left are struggling to cope.
