4:39 pm on 12 March 2014

The ribbon has been cut on the new Solomon Islands High Commission to New Zealand today.

It was declared open in Wellington by the Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, who is on an official trip to New Zealand.

Christopher Gilbert was there.

"After the ribbon cutting Mr Lilo, and the newly appointed high commissioner, Joy Kere, addressed representatives of the New Zealand government. They both paid respects to the indigenous people of New Zealand and highlighted the strong relationship between the two countries. In his key note address Mr Lilo noted New Zealand's commitment to providing aid to his country. He also said the High Commission is significant because of the growing number of New Zealanders traveling to Solomon Islands to work and study. Gordon Darcy Lilo noted his friendship with the National MP John Hayes, who is a former diplomat, and said the New Zealand government is dedicated to its relationship with the Solomons."
