Swains Island calls for voice in house of representatives

12:31 pm on 17 March 2014

A resolution that would amend American Samoa's constitution to allow the delegate from Swains Island a voice in the House of Representatives has been introduced in the Fono.

Currently, the Swains delegate votes in committees but does not vote during the final passage of bills on the House floor.

The constitutional amendment will also need the approval of voters.

The Swains representative, Sua Alex Jennings, says he does not understand why Swains Island does not have a vote in the legislature.

"There is absolutely no reason why Swains Island should not have everything that every other island has here in our territory. It is a very important right to have and I think that Swains Island is entitled to a vote in the house."
