Sport: Fiji threatens Commonwealth Games boycott

11:08 am on 26 March 2014

Fiji may boycott the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after confirmation they will not be able to enter rugby sevens and netball teams in Glasgow.

It comes just over a week after the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group downgraded Fiji's five year suspension from the Commonwealth, freeing it to compete at the Games.

The Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive Michael Hooper said the teams could not be accepted because of "operational difficulties" in redoing the draws.

The Fiji Olympic Committee President, Reg Sanday, says the exclusion is disappointing and the equivalent of Brazil going to the Olympics without its soccer and women's volleyball teams or Jamaica without track and field.

He says FASANOC will meet on Wednesday evening to decide whether or not to accept the offer to take part in the Commonwealth Games.
