Fiji Electoral Decree due to be released

12:51 pm on 28 March 2014

Fiji's much awaited Electoral Decree is due to be released today and an election supervisor should be appointed no later than Monday.

Political parties planning to contest the elections promised for September have asked the regime for weeks to publish the decree.

Three weeks ago, the minister responsible for the elections, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, said the rules would be finalised within days.

There have been delays, which the chairman of the Electoral Commission, Chen Bunn Young, put down to the Commission's discussions with the Solicitor General's office.

The Fiji information ministry says major developments towards the 2014 elections will be announced today.

Four parties have registered for the promised polls, with the regime leader, Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama, expected to launch a fifth party next month.
