Date set for Fiji elections

Fiji has set a date for the first democratic elections in the country in eight years.

The president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has signed off September the 17th as the day set aside.

The Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has also announced the new Supervisor of Elections.

The Acting Permanent Secretary for Justice Mr Mohammed Saneem will resign today to undertake the role.

The government has welcomed proposals from foreign nations and agencies to carry out observer process prior, during and after the election.
