Fiji elections supervisor assures transparency

Fiji's newly appointed Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem says the country's Elections Office is independent and will uphold its core values.

Mr Saneem's appintment was announced last Friday after the government found none of the other 13 applicants met the job's criteria.

Fiji Live reports Mr Saneem says he will discharge his duty with complete integrity, transparency and independence.

He has assured the Electoral Commission of his full support.

But the Fiji Labour Party has questioned the credibility of the appointment of Mr Saneem saying he does not meet the set criteria including the need for 15 years' experience.

The party leader Mahendra Chaudhry says it is highly unlikely that Mr Saneem has had more than a couple of years in private practice.

He says the appointment was clearly made to put the regime's own man in charge of the 2014 general elections.
