Sport: Former PNG Kumul in doubt to face Hunters

11:47 am on 5 April 2014

Former Kumuls international Rod Griffin is in doubt for Sunday's Queensland Cup rugby league match between the Ipswich Jets and PNG Hunters.

The 27 year old lock-forward represented Papua New Guinea at the 2008 World Cup and in the Four Nations tournament two years later.

Jets co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker helped coach the Four Nations team and brought Griffin to Ipswich, where he's become an integral member.

Ben Walker says playing against the Hunters would be a special occasion for the PNG-born Griffin and he will be given until the last moment to get himself right.

"Three hours before the game on Sunday - we will leave it right up to then. It's an important game for Rod and we will give him every chance to be fit to play. Rod's been terrific for us, he's a vital part of our team at the moment and we're hopeful that he does play but if he doesn't we will have a couple of young guys we can choose from. Be nice to have him there but if he's not there we will get the job done without him."

The Hunters are currently fourth in the Queensland Cup standings, one point clear of the Jets.
