Clashes close PNG/Indonesia border post

9:45 am on 7 April 2014

Clashes along the border of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have prompted a border post to be closed.

The Jakarta Post says the shoot-out involved the Indonesian military, police and what it calls armed civilians, during which a border tower was destroyed.

Papua New Guinea's Post Courier says a number of separatist rebels from Papua's OPM have been on the PNG side of the border and reportedly they have been wearing blue berets akin to forces serving for the United Nations.

The rebels are alleged to have fired at the post.

The PNG foreign minister says the government has expressed its concerns to the Indonesian ambassador.

The incident has prompted the PNG military to monitor the area to ensure the safety of Papua New Guinea civilians in the area.

The border post is expected to remain closed all week.
