Solomons food problem not as acute as feared

Oxfam says people in Solomon Islands are not likely to run out of food, although evacuation centres are still packed with people and supplies are stretched.

23 people have been confirmed dead after the main river in the capital Honiara burst its banks last week, and many more are missing.

The Solomon Islands Disaster Management Office said yesterday it was expecting to run out of rations today for the 9,000 people who have been left homeless by the floods.

But the Oxfam country director for the islands, Katie Greenwood, says that's not the case.

The Honiara City Council I think they were saying yesterday that the stocks of food that they had in store would run out today. My understanding is that that has been taken care of by the National Disaster Management Office that had in their stores food that they had iven to the Honiara City Council."
