The New Zealand aid programme is helping transform the Gordon's Market in Papua New Guinea's capital as part of plans to grow that country's fresh produce sector.
The Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, who is in Port Moresby, says New Zealand will provide up to six million US dollars to support an upgrade of what is the biggest produce market in the Pacific.
Mr McCully says the funds will contribute to civil infrastructure works, a new drainage system, new retail market facilities and a dedicated wholesale site.
"We are looking to try and make it part of an integrated package of the development of the fresh produce sector which will include separately some cool store capability, co-operatives, some of the bigger producers that can boost capacity, all designed to increase their capacity to grow local produce, get it to market, rather than importing large supplies."
