French Polynesia's ruling Tahoeraa Huiraatira says it will propose Maina Sage as candidate to fill the seat in the French National Assembly being vacated by Edouard Fritch.

The party leader, Gaston Flosse, announced the party's choice of Ms Sage who is a member of the territorial assembly.

Mr Fritch won the mayoralty in Pirae in last month's municipal election and because of new limits to the number of mandates a French politician may hold, he is set to resign from his Paris job.

He is also the president of the territorial assembly.

Mr Fritch was one of three Tahoeraa politicians who won the three French Polynesia seats in the French National Assembly two years ago.
