Call for tax moratorium for Solomon Island farmers after floods

9:03 am on 16 April 2014

A paramount chief in Solomon Islands says workers at the temporarily closed Gold Ridge Mine and Guadalcanal Plains Palm Oil Limited should be given a one year tax moratorium.

The paramount chief of Thimbo tribe on North Guadalcanal, Benedict Garemane, says the moratorium would enable workers to recoup what has been lost in devastating flash floods that struck the region.

He says workers have lost homes, palm oil trees, food crops, cocoa and other possession in the floods, and the funds could be diverted to help farmers rehabilitate their projects.

The produce from this region is used to feed the populace of Honiara.
