China challenges Vanuatu over dual citizenship

5:15 pm on 25 April 2014

The Chinese embassy in Vanuatu has asked the government in Port Vila to provide the names and passport numbers of Chinese citizens once they have been granted citizenship.

The request comes just weeks after Vanuatu introduced a Capital Investment Immigration Programme, based in Hong Kong, that aimed to collect millions for the government by selling fast-tracked citizenship to Chinese nationals.

But in a letter to the foreign ministry, the embassy says China doesn't recognise dual citizenship and Chinese people who have obtained Vanuatu citizenship will automatically lose their Chinese citizenship.
