Food reaching flooding victims in Solomons

7:35 pm on 28 April 2014

The Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office says it's continuing to deliver food supplies to communities in Honiara and greater Guadalcanal affected by the recent floods.

It says it's concerned for farmers whose crops have been destroyed.

Officials and volunteers have been distributing food supplies to these communities, mostly in the Eastern part of Honiara over the weekend.

The communities will also be rehabilitated with tools and planting materials to help restart their gardening activities.

Meanwhile, daily food distribution to the remaining evacuation centres in Honiara is ongoing.

The centres, mostly in school buildings, have been set up to shelter victims whose homes were completely washed away.

Of a total of 27 evacuation centres, 13 have been closed while 14 are still in full operation.
