A tropical storm that threatened Saipan and Tinian in the Northern Marianas on Tuesday has veered away from the two islands and instead has intensified into a typhoon that is expected to affect Pagan and Alamagan today.
The Guam-based National Weather Service says a tropical storm warning and a typhoon watch remains in effect for those islands.
Contrary to Monday's forecast, Saipan was spared heavy rain but the storm threat forced schools on Saipan and Tinian to suspend classes.
