10:17 am on 6 May 2014

The Fiji Labour Party will meet later this week to discuss the party's leadership following last week's sentencing of Mahendra Chaudhry.

The party leader was found guilty of breaching the Exchange Control Act ruling him out of contention for this year's election.

The party president Lavinia Padarath says there has been much speculation in the media about the leadership issue since the conviction and sentencing.

She says the party has been advised Chaudhry appealed against his conviction last month in the Court of Appeal.

Chaudhry first ran for parliament under the FLP banner in 1986 and in 1999 he became the first Fiji prime minister of Indian ethnicity.
