One of the founders of Fiji's PDP jumps ship

A founding member and former spokesman of Fiji's People's Democratic Party has joined the Social Democratic Liberal Party, or SODELPA.

Nirmal Singh resigned from the party in February, citing that the party was disunited and falling out of favour with the general public.

Registered in May 2013, the party recently chose its leader, former national secretary of the Fiji Trade Union Congress, Felix Anthony.

Mr Singh says it's time to mend divisions in Fiji and his membership of Sodelpa is a way to walk across the racial divide, but he is not hoping for a leadership position.

"I moved to the party unconditionally, I am not for any position. And I think as we move forward to the elections it is the direction Sodelpa needs to use and I am not going to be dictating to them what they should be doing. I am just walking across to them and holding their hands and moving Fiji forward as one nation, one people."
