The Fiji Labour Party has written to the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau to call for the Elections Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to step down from his post immediately.

The Fiji Times reports that the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says electoral process will be tainted if Mr Sayed Khaiyum remains in office.

Mr Chaudhry says his party feels strongly about Mr Sayed-Khaiyum's conflict of interest because he has also been named as the general secretary of the regime's proposed poitical party.

He says the Elections Office and the Electoral Commission should be absolutely independent of any ministerial control, interference or influence.
