Vanuatu dumps Carcasses

5:48 pm on 15 May 2014

Vanuatu MPs are electing a new Prime Minister after a successful vote of no confidence in the leadership of Moana Carcasses.

Our correspondent says Joe Natuman is expected to win the vote to be the next leader.

The vote was supported by 35 of the 52 MPs, with four abstensions.

Mr Carcasses became prime minister in March last year and in the intervening time has faced four votes, or threats of votes, of no confidence.

The opposition had said the impetus for this vote came from MPs within the government coalition.
