Babies still delivered by torchlight in Vanuatu, claims former minister

Serge Vohor, who was Vanuatu's Health Minister until last week's change of government, says in parts of the country midwives sometimes have to deliver babies by torchlight.

In his last address before the Moana Carcasses coalition was brought down last week, Mr Vohor, revealed the electricity utility UNELCO is planning to donate lighting equipment for the Tassiriki dispensary in a remote part of Santo Island.

He told parliament that despite being independent for 34 years Vanuatu remained one of the few countries where nurses rely on torch light to deliver newborn babies.
