NZ taxpayers group hits out over Cooks aid use

11:17 am on 21 May 2014

The New Zealand Taxpayers' Union has hit out at alleged misuse of New Zealand aid money in the Cook Islands.

TV3 in New Zealand has reported the Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna is set to get an estimated US$100,000 worth of equipment and loan funding from the New Zealand government for his pearl farm in Manihiki.

The broadcaster reports Mr Puna had not declared his interests as required under the funding arrangement between the two countries.

The Union's Jordan Williams says New Zealand aid money is meant to help those in need.

Mr Puna could not be reached for comment.
