PNG cyclone victims say still awaiting relief

Papua New Guineans in Milne Bay Province say they are still awaiting government assistance in the aftermath of Cyclone Ita.

PNG Village reports the Provincial Disaster Coordinator in Alotau, Eric Balaria, says money sent by the Prime Minister to the Disaster Office for the people is still tied up in the Treasury Department.

Mr Balaria says 2.1 million US dollars was pledged by Mr O'Neill to assist the people of Alotau, but he has not received anything yet.

He says last month disaster managers completed the first phase of the disaster appeal by sending food, water and clothing to the affected communities.

Mr Balaria says the supplies are now finished and he has asked the National Disaster Centre in Port Moresby for a further $35,000 US dollars to continue the relief effort.
