First PNG gas en route to Japan

The first cargo of liquefied natural gas from Papua New Guinea's major LNG project is headed for Japan.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Exxon Mobil-led project's first gas shipments are going to Tokyo Electric Power Company.

Other customers of the PNG venture - which can produce 6.9 million metric tons of LNG a year - are Sinopec, Osaka Gas Co, and Taiwan's CPC Corp.

The US$19 billion project makes PNG the world's newest significant energy exporter.

PNG's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says the project has brought significant economic benefits to the country that will last for generations to come,
