Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has axed more than half a million dollars of funding for Australia's peak refugee body over the next 3 years.
It is a reduction of 129,000 US dollars for the coming year and similar allocations for the following two years.
The minister made the cut despite the funding being allocated in this month's budget.
Mr Morrison says he made the move amid a tight fiscal environment and amid budgetary constraints because of Labor's failed economic management.
The Refugee Council's Paul Power says the decision was communicated by telephone.
He says the decision is petty and vindictive and is symbolic of the minister's very poor relationship with the non-government sector.
