Cook Islands netball coach Trish Wilcox faces her first major test in charge at next week's Pacific Series in Rarotonga, which doubles as a World Cup qualifier.

Wilcox was appointed head coach in February, having last year taken the Samoa Under 21 team to the Youth World Championships.

She says the goal for the Cook Islands is to finish in the top two which would seal their World Cup spot in Sydney.

It's her first taste of coaching senior international netball although she will have some familiar faces on board.

"There's three or four players, a while ago now, that I had the pleasure of coaching when I was at Epsom Girls Grammar School there as a coach. So there's a few I've known for quite a long time as they came through high school and some, as you say, I have known because they have been playing representative netball in Auckland."

Trish Wilcox says there's also a couple of players in the Samoa team that she coached in the Under 21s.
