The Pacific Council of Churches is calling for religious leaders to speak out strongly against violent action taken in the name of faith.
Its general secretary, Reverend Francois Pihaatae, made the call this week after the Methodist Church in Fiji was ordered to pay $15,000 US dollars to a family whose home was destroyed by the orders of religious elders.
Reports say the group of people burned the home after claiming to have received divine guidance at a prayer meeting.
Reverend Pihaatae says churches in Fiji must move quickly to remind congretations that such actions are not Christian.
He says it makes the same call to churches in Papua New Guinea, where the burning of people accused of socery has become more common.
