Vanuatu's Deputy Commissioner of Police has given six high-risk prisoners on the run until three o'clock this afternoon to surrender or they will be hunted down by Vanuatu Mobile Officers with live bullets.
John Taleo says the prisoners should heed the warning, as he also warned residents to take care, as some of the escapees are convicted rapists.
Two years ago, a group of escapees was also given time to surrender and while some did, one did not and was shot and killed.
While his family has complained of mistreatment by the police, critics of criminal behaviour say all escapees have to understand that the victims of their criminal acts are also protected under the law.
