Fiji regime leader opens Geneva embassy

5:31 pm on 4 June 2014

The Fiji regime leader has opened a mission to the United Nations in Geneva that also serves as Fiji's embassy in Switzerland.

A former High Court judge, Nazhat Shameem, is the ambassador in what is her first diplomatic posting.

Rear Admiral Frank Bainiamarama says his government operates an independent foreign policy on the principle of being friends to all and enemies to none

He has likened his government's foreign policy to that of Switzerland, saying its position of neutrality takes strength to resist the pressure of those who are economically stronger or who have bigger defence forces.

As a developing country accredited to the UN, Fiji has been allowed by the Swiss government to have its embassy in Geneva and won't have to open one in the capital, Bern.
