Long road to gender equality in Solomons

The Asia Development Bank has completed what it says is the first comprehensive assessment of the role of women in Solomon Islands society.

The ADB's principal social development specialist in Honiara, Sunhwa Lee, says the goal of the Country Gender Assessment is to better focus policies and priorities to improve the quality of life for women.

She says the report found that the Solomon Islands government has committed to promoting equal opportunities for women, but more needs to be done to translate commitments into action.

"What we found is that there are very much close linkages across sectors affecting womens status and womens access to opportunities and access to other resources."

Sunhwa Lee says some traditional gender roles within families are hindering womens' participation in things like politics and education and this needs to be addressed.
