Power fixed in Marshalls

11:56 am on 9 June 2014

Power engineers in the Marshall islands managed to avert a long-term shut down of power in the capital Majuro late on Friday night after they were able to fix the power plant's main generator.

A surge at the power plant destroyed a key part of the generator cutting power to the entire island for about 30 hours.

Our correspondent in Majuro says during the outage, backup generators at Majuro Hospital also broke, plunging it into darkness.

The Marshalls Energy Company's large, six-megawatt engine went down on Thursday following a freak power surge, and its main back up generator was still undergoing maintenance.
