11:33 am on 14 June 2014

Papua New Guinea's Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga has been granted bail in a special night sitting of the Supreme Court, hours after being sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Mr Kulunga was earlier convicted on contempt of court charges for failing to reinstate Geoffrey Vaki to his position as Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations after he was suspended on cabinet orders in 2012.

Yesterday Deputy Chief Justice Gibs Salika handed down the sentence which is to be served at the Bomana Correctional Institution in Port Moresby

Local media is reporting that a special bail was awarded on the sum of 4 thousand US dollars, while a late appeal by Commissioner Kulunga's legal team is pending.
