Opposition to Apia site for Samoa fish plant

2:29 pm on 19 June 2014

Samoa's Opposition Leader Palusalue Faapo II says the location of a proposed fish loin plant will destroy the Apia township.

He was commenting on reports that the US company Bumble Bee is looking at setting up a fish processing plant at the Apia wharf.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi has predicted if this project goes ahead it could create more than 1,000 jobs.

Palusalue says he is in favour of the proposed plant due to the work it could generate for the Samoan people, but wants it set up somewhere far from the Apia township.

He says it is a stupid idea to have a fish loin factory in town.

Palusalue says it is contradictory for the Prime Minister to say he wants to beautify the coast line, yet he turns around and promotes a fish loining plant in town.

Referring to the cannery in American Samoa the Tautua Party leader says Pago Pago smells and that destroys the environment.

He says suggested Aleipata Wharf or some other part of the country as possible sites.
