PNG capital sees protest against PM

7:16 pm on 20 June 2014

A small peaceful protest against Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill was held outside the gates of the national parliament today.

The Occupy Waigani protest by between one and two dozen people, is voicing opposition to the Prime Minister's disbanding of the anti-corruption team Taskforce Sweep among other developments this week.

The protestors say Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop should condemn the disbanding of Taskforce Sweep, which has begun making some headway in prosecuting high-level corruption in PNG.

The protest calls for the resignation of Mr O'Neill who has was recently referred to police by Taskforce Sweep over his alleged role in illegal payments to a law firm.
