Sport: Running rugby in store for Tonga v Barbarians clash

10:11 am on 21 June 2014

Pacific Barbarians rugby coach Buck Shelford says fans can expect plenty of running rugby in Sunday's one-off clash against Tonga in Auckland.

The match was organised by the Tonga Rugby Union after they were left with a free weekend during the June test window.

Former All Blacks Jerry Collins, Sione Lauaki and Sitiveni Sivivatu are among the star names in the Baabaas selection, alongside ex Wallabies Radike Samo and Digby Ioane.

Buck Shelford says most of the players met up yesterday and hope to have a full training run today to shake off a few cobwebs.

"Well the names they've got there are very very nice but if they turn up is another story. It will be nice to see some of those boys and they're all playing overseas and enjoying their lives whichever city they're in, playing their rugby and some of them have just retired. It's just about getting together and giving Tonga a good run for their money and play a game that's going to bring along a decent crowd."

Buck Shelford will be joined by former 'Ikale Tahi coach Isitolo Maka and Pita Alatini in the coaching box for tomorrow's match.
