A refugee who was resettled on Nauru has drowned and a local who tried to rescue him has also lost his life.
Another local involved in the rescue attempt was in a critical condition yesterday evening in hospital.
A government spokesperson says the drowning happened about 5 o'clock on Sunday evening.
The first asylum seekers found to be refugees were resettled in Nauru in May.
They included three families and four single men.
Those resettled are free to move around the island, find jobs and be part of the community.
