A team from the United States' federal healthcare agency has given American Samoa's only hospital 20 days to submit a corrective action plan, or else it faces losing its accreditation.
The Centres for Medicaid and Medicare Services team, or CMS, last week made an announced visit to the LBJ Hospital to decide whether it will continue to receive federal funding.
The team inspected all operations of the hospital, including nursing, maintenance and facilities.
It also looked at the hospital board's role and activities, and had questions about the appointment of the current chief medical officer, Iota Saleapaga.
Sources say the hospital's certification may be in jeopardy due to concerns about the nursing division, and disagreements between the board and chief executive.
