Strong quake between Fiji and Samoa

7:10 am on 30 June 2014

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has struck between Fiji and Samoa at a depth of 10 kilometres, in the early hours of this morning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists, but earthquakes of that size can generate local tsunamis that can be destructive around coasts within a hundred kilometres of the epicentre, and authorities should take appropriate action.

The quake struck at latitude 14.6 degrees south and longitude 175.3 degrees west.
