Female election candidates in Fiji get advice

A workshop designed to assist female candidates to prepare for the upcoming elections in Fiji has been given the go ahead.

The Fiji Women's Forum has been given approval by the Supervisor of Elections to run its week long Candidate Capacity Strengthening Workshop in Suva this week.

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls from the Women's Forum says the workshop will identify and respond to challenges that women candidates face, and to campaign more effectively towards the elections in September.

She says the requirements on civil society meant they had to get approval from the Elections office, which is frustrating.

"This particular section 115 of the Elections Decree has actually slowed down broader civil society processes to get involved with the different needs of potential voters and women who are keen to participate in the electoral process."

Sharon Bhagwan Rolls says the training will build on regional expertise of female politicians including former PNG parliamentarian Dame Carol Kidu.
