Traditional boat owners in American Samoa whose vessels were destroyed during the 2009 tsunami may receive compensation.

Compensation for the owners of the craft, known as "alia", is one of the projects proposed for funding from the US$1m fisheries disaster relief grant fund awarded to American Samoa.

The United States Department of Commerce grant will also fund the maintenance of the Malaloa floating dock and the construction of an alia boat maintenance facility.

The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources in American Samoa is looking to hire someone to administer the grant.
