PNG leader wants unbiased independent police investigation

3:46 pm on 2 July 2014

Papua New Guinea's prime minister Peter O'Neill is to appeal to the Supreme Court to determine whether the bills paid to Paraka Lawyers were fraudulent or legally earned by the law firm.

The Post Courier reports Mr O'Neill saying this after the National Court on Tuesday rejected his request for a stay on an arrest warrant in relation to the Paraka legal bills.

He says if it comes to a situation where the bills were legally earned then the entire nation is destroyed for the sake of the political ambition of one or two.

The prime minister says the National Court decision stated clearly that the police commissioner under the constitution has the power to charge, prosecute and withdraw charges based on credible independent evidence.

He says he will respect the decisions of the commissioner in the handling of any investigation.

Mr O'Neill says all he has sought is to have an unbiased independent police investigation into any allegation.
