Police Department will accept his request to donate its old weapons to the territory.

Mr Haleck says if the request is approved, it would save American Samoa from having to purchase new weapons which cost up to 500 US dollars each.

The police commissioner is hoping for a few hundred guns to be donated by Honolulu, which is switching to new Glock semi-automatic guns.

Meanwhile Mr Haleck is awaiting the final review and approval of policies and procedures governing the training and evaluation of police officers before they are allowed to carry guns.

That material is being put together by a Gun Task Force appointed by the governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga.
