Subsidised recycling needed in Cook Islands

3:42 pm on 4 July 2014

A Cook Islands environment group says the next government will have to act quickly to deal with growing amounts of rubbish.

Cook Islanders will go to the polls next week and the director of Te Ipukarea Society, Kelvin Passfield, says waste from imported goods is rapidly filling the landfills.

"The schools are using computers, every house has probably got two or three computers, even smaller things like smartphones and people don't know what to do with their, electronic waste, which is why the'll end up just dumping it on the street and hope it'll just go away. Out of sight, out of mind."

Kelvin Passfield says it is too expensive to ship waste out to other places and says an advanced disposal fee on imported goods or a subsidised recycling programme should be brought in.
