The Papua New Guinea attorney general has retracted a determination he made on the legality of state payments to the Paraka Law firm.

The Papua New Guinea attorney general has retracted a determination he made on the legality of state payments to the Paraka Law firm.

Ano Pala on Tuesday announced that there was nothing illegal or criminal in the payments made by the state to the law firm.

He said he'd written to the police commissioner advising him to drop the case because new material that had emerged exonerated those charged over the payments.

An arrest warrant was issued on the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill last month over his alleged role in approving the payments.

However, Mr Pala has now released a press statement saying the media has mis-interpreted and mis-construed his letter to the Commissioner.

He says the legality of the payments is a matter entirely for the courts to determine in proceedings currently before the courts.

It's understood that Mr Pala has today been summoned to the national court where he is expected to face contempt of court charges.
