Latest Vanuatu confidence vote plan dropped

3:34 pm on 15 July 2014

Reports from Vanuatu suggest a vote of no confidence in the government is now unlikely.

Two weeks ago the opposition claimed the backing of 29 of the 52 MPs and planned a motion to remove prime minister, Joe Natuman.

But at meetings over the past weekend they could only muster 21 votes and so lack the numbers to force the calling of an extra-ordinary sitting of the parliament.

Mr Natuman had maintained he had no concerns and had the numbers to defeat any motion for a vote of no confidence.
