Teen pilot killed in American Samoa

A teenager from the United States is dead and his father missing after their single-engine aircraft crashed into the water off the coast of American Samoa last night.

Coast Guard received reports that a Beechcraft Bonanza with two passengers aboard crashed into the water after taking off from Pago Pago International Airport at about 10 o'clock local time.

The body of 17-year-old Haris Suleman was recovered by the Marine Patrol.

Our correspondent, Fili Sagapolutele, says there is an major search and rescue effort underway for his father, 58-year-old Babar Suleman.

"A C-19 aircraft out of Honolulu has just landed in American Samoa to assist in the search and rescue effort, and the lieutenant governor of American Samoa has directed that all territorial government assets be dedicated to find the missing person."

Fili Sagapolutele says federal investigators are working to find out the cause of the crash.

The father and son were on a round-the-world trip to fundraise for schools to be built in rural Pakistan.
