American Samoa's acting governor has ordered all territorial government assets be concentrated on the search and rescue effort following a plane crash near the capital, Pago Pago.

Authorities recovered the remains of 17-year old Haris Suleman, but his father, Babar Suleman, remains missing after their single-engine aircraft crashed into the sea not long after taking off from Pago Pago airport on Tuesday night.

Lemanu Peleti Mauga says a federal investigation is ongoing, but at this point, the priority is the effort to recover Mr Suleman.

A United States Coast Guard C-130 Hercules airplane has arrived in Pago Pago from Hawai'i to assist with the search.

The father and son, from the United States, were enroute to Honolulu on a round-the-world fundraising trip.
