Solomons to push for Rodgers to head Forum

7:27 pm on 24 July 2014

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, will lead a seven person delegation to next week's Pacific Islands Forum summit in Palau to push for Jimmie Rodgers to become the new secretary general of the body.

Dr Rodgers until earlier this year held a similar position at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

He is a Solomon Islander and a medical doctor but has spent many years involved with regional bureaucracies.

Two of the other contenders are also from the Melanesian bloc - Papua New Guinean diplomat Meg Taylor, and Fiji diplomat and politician, Kaliopate Tavola.
