Major American Samoa store overcomes rat problem

7:30 pm on 25 July 2014

American Samoa's biggest retail store, Cost U Less, has reopened for business after being closed by the Health Department.

The department took action at the beginning of the week after an inspection found evidence of a rat infestation.

The closure came after previous attempts by the department to work with the store to rectify the rat problem.

Customers had reported seeing rats in the store and buying food items which had been eaten by rats.

The store reopened at 2 o'clock this afternon.

The department reports a big improvement in health standards and cleaniless but a further inspection is planned next week.

It says in the meantime the store will be allowed to trade.
